Demystifying & Destigmatizing Breast Augmentation
How Breast Implants Can Safely (& Tastefully) Enhance Your Confidence

In the premiere episode of Asking for a Friend, we’re bringing in the experts from Donaldson to shed light on one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures: breast augmentation.
Join your host Carrie Esposito, Jeffrey Donaldson, MD, board-certified plastic surgeon, along with Dr. Marguerite Weston, double board-certified functional medicine physician, and skincare expert Nikki Rucinsky, as they discuss everything you need to know about breast augmentation — from breast implant safety to finding the right size.
“It has never made me feel ‘less me.’ It has made me more confident in so many ways. Most women aren’t getting them done so they can have attention!”
Are Breast Implants Safe?
Yes — and breast implants are one of the most studied medical devices in history. Years ago, they were temporarily removed from the market to undergo extensive research involving millions of patients and thousands of surgeons. The concerns about potential links to autoimmune diseases were not scientifically supported, and implants were reintroduced with important safety enhancements.
Long-Term Safety & The “Gummy Bear” Implant
Modern implants have a thicker, more durable shell and a cohesive silicone interior — meaning that even if an implant is compromised, the material stays intact rather than leaking. You often hear these called ‘Gummy Bear” implants. While the FDA recommends periodic MRIs to monitor for rupture, most patients will never experience an issue. Advances in implant design have made them remarkably resilient, withstanding the demands of everything from high-impact athletics to everyday life.

How Do I Choose The Best Breast Implant Size?
Choosing the right size is a personalized process that blends science with individual preference. We take precise measurements of your chest wall, breast width and natural proportions to determine a range of implants that will complement your body.
Since everyone’s anatomy is unique — rib cage shape, muscle structure and breast spacing all play a role — the same implant can look very different from one person to another. That’s why we encourage patients to focus on what feels right for them rather than comparing to online photos.

It’s All Based On Your Personal Tastes
Some patients want a subtle, natural look, while others prefer a more noticeable enhancement — both are valid! The goal is to create balanced, natural-looking volume that makes you feel confident, whether that means restoring fullness after weight loss or pregnancy or simply enhancing your shape.
You’ll have the opportunity to try different sizes and profiles, seeing how they look in clothing, bikinis or alongside a trusted friend or partner.
Saline Or Silicone Breast Implants?
For patients looking for the most resilient and aesthetically natural choice, silicone implants remain the preferred option.
Modern silicone implants are designed to maintain their shape even if compromised. While saline implants are a safe option — essentially filled with sterile salt water — they are more prone to visible rippling and deflation if ruptured. Interestingly, both types of implants have a silicone shell, so even those who opt for saline will still have silicone in their body.
Can A Breast Augmentation Save You Money In The Long Run?
My surgery was a game-changer. You no longer need those $80 Victoria’s Secret bras because you actually feel comfortable & confident in anything. You end up saving some money on bras because you wear ones that are actually comfortable — or look amazing with no bra! You can even feel comfortable in those cheap ones that are $20 for 3 on Amazon.”
