Frequently Asked Questions

Your aesthetician will work with you to decide what type of peel gives you the best result and what is appropriate for your skin type (normal, dry, oily, combination and sensitive) and based on your skin concerns. For people who regularly receive chemical peels, the strength of each peel can be increased each time. As a result, the person’s tolerance increases, and over time, one can receive stronger peels with decreased downtime.

It’s All About Your Goals & Your Glow

Tatjana Dzamov and Nikki Rucinsky know the ins and outs of each of these treatments – from ingredients to expectations based on specific skin types. They will discuss your history with chemical peels, your current skin care regimen and your biggest concerns before matching you with the perfect option.

Chemical peels regenerate the skin and stimulate collagen and elastin production by giving you microscopic exfoliation. The goal of a peel is not necessary to make your skin peel intensely; instead, the treatment looks to replace dead skin cells and increase cell turnover. How deep the specific chemical peel is applied can vary based on a number of factors, including the product’s pH, concentration, type of the chemical being used and the methodology used to apply the product on the skin.

Many patients prefer chemical peels because they are less expensive, fairly comfortable and offer a swift, excellent result.

During a chemical peel treatment, the ingredients cause a reaction with the skin and dissolve the outer layers of dead skin (Stratum Corneum layer of the epidermis) to help even the skin tone and improve texture while promoting collagen and elastin formation and the release of growth factors.

The result is visibly healthier-looking skin, with clearer and more even texture and tone and the appearance of diminished pore size.

Learn More About How To Prepare For Your Appointment Here

In order to determine if you are a good candidate for a chemical peel, we start by asking you a few questions about your skin.

THESE QUESTIONS CAN INCLUDE:

  • Do you see brown or age spots on your face, neck or chest?
  • Do you have an uneven skin texture or tone?
  • Do you have red spots, visible capillaries or Rosacea?
  • Do you have fine lines and wrinkles which would like to minimize them?
  • Do you have oily skin?
  • Do you have dry skin?
  • Do you have actinic (solar) keratoses?

If the answers to any of these questions are yes, you are most likely a good candidate for a chemical peel!

Patients with the following conditions are not a candidate for a peel:

  • Isotretinoin (Cis-retinoic acid, Accutane, Roaccutane) use within 6 months or a year (must obtain a physician’s recommendation)
  • Skin not acclimated with Vitamin A
  • Micro-dermabrasion, dermabrasion or laser resurfacing
  • Herpetic outbreak (cold sores)
  • Recent waxing or extractions
  • Open wounds (acne lesions or other bleeding lesions)
  • Pregnancy and lactation
  • Cancer or radiation treatment or if skin feels sensitive
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Recent permanent make-up
  • Sunburn
  • Dermatitis
  • Expectations that exceed what chemical peels can do

Depending on the type of peel, one may experience a mild tingling sensation or feel heat on their skin. You may notice no peeling or by the second or third day, you’ll notice flaking and this may continue for up to 7 to 10 days.

Chemical peels should be done in a series of three to six peels or as needed, preferably during the fall and winter seasons. Depending on the p.H and type of the peel one is receiving, one can have a chemical peel once a week, every other week or up to every month or longer in between. The repetition results in a more intense effect without being painful, harmful or destructive to the skin and gives excellent results.

It’s important that you don’t aggravate skin, scrub, pull or pick at skin or generate any additional heat during the first 48 hours. Your skin will be more susceptible to burning and Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH). Avoid exercise and hot baths for 48 hours. Apply physical sunscreen every day regardless of the weather and sun exposure.

Also, avoid the use of harsh exfoliants or active cleansers (such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, etc) for 2 weeks after your treatment.
